B’ville’s Brits takes junior title
Fourteen-year-old Bellville Golf Club member Jeré Brits scored the biggest victory of his young career when he defeated Western Province inter provincial player Tyran Snyders in a play-off at Rondebosch Golf Club to lift his first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series title recently.
“I don’t usually play as well as I did today,” Brits said after the win. “During the play-off my heart was beating quite hard!”
Brits battled the cold, wind and rain to shoot 71 in very challenging playing conditions. By securing his first #BridgejuniorSeries title he qualifies for the regional finals in April 2019 where the ultimate prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the prestigious junior North and South Championships at Pinehurst in the USA.
Having played in the junior World Championships at Pinehurst last year, Brits is eager for the opportunity to compete there again if he wins the regional finals of the Bridge Junior Series next April.
“I already have a passport and a 10-year visa to the US, so I am all set,” he quipped. “It would be honour to play there again.”
Schooled and coached at the Golf School of Excellence run by the Paul Mackenzie Golf Academy in Bellville, Brits took up the game at the age of five when his grandfather gave him a set of clubs.
“I love golf because it keeps you humble,” he said.
The Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, which is geared at golf development, launched in July 2017 with 16 tournaments countrywide featuring u.19 and u.13 divisions for boys and girls.
Endorsed by GolfRSA, the series is managed by Peter Little of the South African Golf Development Board.
“Tyran was undone by some bad luck in the play-off, but well done to Jeré for his excellent play under very trying weather conditions -we look forward to hosting him at the regional finals in April 2019,” says Paul Stewart, executive director at Bridge Fund Managers.
