Young golfers perform well

Young golfers from the Helderberg fared well at the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at Strand Golf Club Sunday (10 September).

Deon Germishuys finished third in the A-division under-19 title. The Strand local won the first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at Royal Cape back in July.

Sam Simpson from Bellville beat Hilmi Mallick in a sudden-death play-off after the pair tied on one under par 71, but it was Simpson’s well-planned five for par at the final hole during regulation play that earned him a stab at the title.

The Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series draws all the top juniors in South Africa. The 18-event national junior golf development initiative between Bridge Fund Managers and GolfRSA, is open to boys and girls in the under-13 and under-19 divisions. The big prize sees the top two golfers in the under-19 division being flown to the USA to compete in the Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst in 2018 – a prestigious event which has featured future Major winners, including Jack Nicklaus. Germishuys has already qualified for the regional finals at the end of the series next year.

Francois Cilliers and Crystal Beukes were tied fourth at two over par and Du Toit Fourie was placed ninth. Annalie Swanepoel was 10th and Gideon van Rensburg was tied at 18th.

Twins Nicholas and Andries van der Vyfer (10) also enjoyed a lively contest in the under-13 B-Division Individual Stableford competition at their home course. Nicholas netted the victory with 51 points off his 22-handicap, while Andries took second on 44 points.
